For Immediate Release

Mississauga ON - Canadian Golf Superintendents Association (CGSA) is releasing the most recent Canadian Golf Maintenance Department Compensation Study. The Study was conducted in August 2025 by a third-party firm; The Portage Group which is an association consulting group with a specialty in this type of research. This is the second time conducting the survey with this group. The Study encompassed a total of 2,031 maintenance facility employees.

The Study was done for the second time in conjunction with several regional associations; BCGSA, STA, MGSA, OVTA, QGSA and Atlantic GSA. This allowed a much larger reach to superintendents to participate in the survey and seek this valued feedback.

As a CGSA Superintendent member who participated in the Study, you are receiving the full results (a savings of $350 for members/$700 for non members). The results contained within the report should assist those seeking to attract the right people for the job with a competitive wage and benefits package. As well as assisting in negotiation of your individual compensation and benefits package.

When it came to the type of clubs that participated in the Study public clubs were the most common among participants accounting for 36%, edging out semi-private clubs at 34%. Four in five (80%) of participating golf clubs indicated that they operate 18-hole courses, while 8% responded 27 holes and 6% said nine-hole courses.

There was a good mix of Study participants by size of operating budget, operating budgets of $250,000 - $499,999 (25%) and $500,000 - $749,999 (24%) each account for one-quarter of respondents while 34% were between $750,000 and $1.5 million. The average operating budget for 2025 among participant golf clubs was $972,000 while the median was $774,700. Two-thirds (68%) of participating golf clubs report that payroll accounts for 50% - 69% of the operating budget. With the average being 54.8% of the operating budget.

The Study’s value will be seen particularly in the benchmark sections for all positions. In this area you will be able to see the average salary for a number of positions ranging from Superintendent to Labourer with the number of years experience, age, type of facility, operating and capital budgets.

The area on Health and Insurance Benefits is an extremely valuable asset to have when attracting employees in various areas of the maintenance operation. Top health benefits outlined in the Study’s results include 71% of Superintendents reported receiving dental care and prescription drug coverage. Assistant Superintendents have a higher acceptance of health benefits over Superintendents with results showing 81% receive dental care and prescription drug coverage. In both cases family coverage and extended healthcare is generally a lower percentage shown. Other maintenance department staff show 37% that have them covered.

Regional results are being shared with participating associations, or you can contact CGSA for details.

CGSA will look to build upon the success of the 2025 survey with the next version and encourages participation by all members.
