CGSA Announces Robin Sadler, MS, AGS as the 2024 CGSA/Rain Bird Environmental Achievement Award (EAA) Winner

Mississauga, ON - The Canadian Golf Superintendents Association (CGSA) and Rain Bird are pleased to announce Robin Sadler, MS, AGS, Master Superintendent at Mickelson National Golf Club (MNGC) in Rocky View County, Alberta, as the CGSA/Rain Bird Environmental Achievement of the Year Award winner for 2024.
The CGSA/Rain Bird Environmental Achievement Award recognizes a golf course superintendent member of the CGSA who has distinguished themselves through dedication and contribution to the profession and to their community. The recipient must complete an environmental project, program or practice on their course and then document the environmental impact this initiative has had at their facility.
Robin has been a CGSA member since 1995 and holds the association's Master Superintendent (MS) and Accredited Golf Superintendent (AGS) designations. He sits on CGSA's Accreditation Committee and is a Past President of the AGSA.
Robin led a team from Mickelson National Golf Club to recently become the first golf club in Canada to achieve the GEO Sustainable Golf Certification. This recognizes that they have met the standards of that certification and continue their efforts of environmental stewardship.
Some of the sustainable environmental initiatives that Sadler has implemented at the golf course that secured him receiving this award include:
- Grass Clipping Separator — Grass clipping separation system ensures recycled water can be used in equipment washing helping to conserve water usage.
- Water Usage and Management — Reduction in year-to-year water usage through minimal irrigation and precision watering ensuring water is utilized efficiently and only where needed.
- Irrigation with Reclaimed Water - Using Treated Sewage Effluent (TSE) for irrigation improves turf health through natural nutrients, lowering our environmental impact.
- Eco Friendly Algae Control with Solar Power - Utilizing ultrasonic solar powered algae control systems minimizing algae growth in ponds fostering a healthier aquatic ecosystem.
- Biodiversity and Sustainable Honey Harvesting - Participating in operation pollinator and collaborating with Harmony Honey. MNGC is supporting pollinator habits, nature educational walks and harvesting honey onsite.
- Reducing Carbon and Noise Pollution — Shifting to a fully lithium powered cart fleet has significantly reduced carbon emissions all while reducing 18 000 liters of fuel used. MNGC has 8 lithium utility vehicles and 1 lithium triplex while they continue to progress this program.
